Emma, Part IV

Emma stays silent. At that moment, Frederik comes home from work.

FREDERIK:

Hello, family! Sorry, I came home

late! But you won’t be mad when you

see what I brought home!

Marthe gives him a kiss hello. Emma just stares at the box that is in his arms. Frederik puts it down and shows them what is inside.

FREDERIK:

Look! Jewelry! Silver picture frames!

Oh, some new pots and pans!

MARTHE:

Oh, honey, they’re beautiful!

Frederik hands Emma a porcelain doll. Emma notices that there is a drop of blood on the doll’s face.

EMMA:

Where did you get this stuff?

FREDERIK:

We found a herd of Jews hiding in

some warehouse, and we-

Emma abruptly leaves the house.

EXT. ICE CREAM PARLOR. EVENING.

A local ice cream parlor is closed up, but Hadon and Belinda sit outside finishing their ice cream. Emma comes up to them, looking dismal.

HADON:

So, you’ve heard?

EMMA:

About Belinda’s baby?

HADON:

No. They found out that my mother

had a psychotic break down when

she was younger. She got better,

but the law does not allow certain

genes to be passed on. They made

my mother and I sterile. I will not

be able to produce a child for the

regime.

Hadon buries his head in his hands in shame. Belinda pats him in comfort.

EMMA:

I’m so sorry they did this to you.

HADON:

It’s not their fault. I certainly

don’t want to pass on bad genes.

That’s exactly what the Jews have

been doing.

EMMA:

I don’t think genes make you good

or bad. I think you make yourself

good or bad.

BELINDA:

Emma! Are you questioning the party?

EMMA:

Maybe it needs to be questioned.

Hadon and Belinda drop their ice cream in horror.

EMMA:

The German machine is powered from

oil made from innocent blood!

HADON:

Our country is already prospering by

the party’s regime!

EMMA:

But at what price? The only reason

we have any success is because we

are stealing from the dead!

BELINDA:

You are talking about Jews like they

are humans!

EMMA:

They are humans! You think the Nazis

are out there slaying monsters? Have

you bothered to find out for yourself

whether or not they’re claims are true?

No, you just blindly follow orders like

rats in a maze. The Nazis spill blood at

the blink of an eye! I think Nazis are

monsters and you’re the one that’s not

human!

Before Emma can go on, Belinda and Hadon pin her down. They beat her up until she feigns being unconscious.

HADON:

Should we tell someone?

BELINDA:

No. Let her suffer.

Hadon and Belinda walk away. Emma opens an eye and watches the sole of their shoes disappear into the night. Emma closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.

INT. KITCHEN. EVENING.

Frederik and Marthe are sitting down to dinner. Emma walks in and sits down. She does not say a word to her parents. Marthe serves Emma some food.

MARTHE:

Your school called today.

EMMA:

Why?

MARHTE:

They said you didn’t come in

today.

EMMA:

Oh, well, I, uh, I didn’t feel

too well…

FREDERIK:

It’s alright, darling.

EMMA:

It is?

FREDERIK:

You don’t have to go to that school

anymore.

EMMA:

I don’t?

MARTHE:

No. Your father got some exciting

news.

FREDERIK:

I got promoted!

EMMA:

Congratulations.

FREDERIK:

I will be in charge of the Schwarze

Wolke camp!

Emma drops her fork. She stares blankly ahead. Frederik expected her to be excited and looks a little crestfallen.

FREDERIK:

I’m sorry that we will be moving

again. But we will be living in a

bigger and better house. We will

make more money. And I will truly

make a difference for Germany.

Everyone is quiet for a beat.

MARTHE:

Have some more potatoes, honey.

Emma cannot muster up an appetite. She leaves the table and runs to her room.
