Amouraq, Part 6

EXT. GARGOYLE’S LAIR. LATE AFTERNOON.

Stephen keeps his gun pointed out ahead of him and stays a step ahead of Emily for her protection as they continue. Both remain vigilant and ready to act if needed. The silence is unsettling. All of a sudden, the sound of flapping wings breaks the silence. Before they can figure out where the noise had come from, a creature that looks like a demented bat pounces on Stephen! He is pinned to the ground by the beast.

EMILY:
A gargoyle!

STEPHEN:
Help me! The claws are
digging into me like knives!

The gargoyle shifts on his back and roars like a dinosaur. It stares Emily, daring her to try something. Emily slashes her right hand at him and says a spell.

EMILY:
Slakirim!

The spell hits the gargoyle and has no effect. The gargoyle rises into the air with Stephen in its claws. It heads towards the darkness in the distance, but long before it gets there, Emily does a spell while waving her hands once over her head.

EMILY:
Luminious maximumus!

The gargoyle turns into stone. It falls to the ground landing on Stephen! Emily runs about ten feet to where he is.

EMILY:
(kneels next to him)
Oh please be okay!

STEPHEN:
I appreciate your efforts,
but now it’s crushing me.

EMILY:
Oh, um, right.
(points at the gargoyle)
Rupe!

The gargoyle breaks into hundreds of tiny pieces. Emily rushes over to brush the pieces off and helps Stephen up.

EMILY:
Oh, I’m so sorry! I panicked.
I remembered that gargoyles
hate direct sunlight. I didn’t
even think about the weight of
the statue and you. Oh man, I
really need to perfect this
rescuing thing, don’t I?

STEPHEN:
Don’t say that. You saved
my life. Even if what you
said is true, the important
thing is you got the job
done. Thank you so much!

EMILY:
It’s least I could do for
your service to Amouraq!

Emily notices that Stephen is still hunched over trying to catch his breath.

EMILY:
Need a minute?

STEPHEN:
Not unless you have a spell
to fix me.

Emily shakes her head, so Stephen gestures wordlessly that he needs a minute. Emily chuckles slightly.

EXT. COPIBOMB CORNER. LATE AFTERNOON.

They continue on their way cautiously. They hardly say a word to each other just incase. At the moment, they are wondering why they hadn’t run into anything yet when a nearby bush rustles near them! Stephen instinctively points his gun at the bush. A SECOND EMILY jumps out from that spot! Before anyone can react, there is a flash. The two Emily’s are standing next each other with a digital clock between them.

STEPHEN:
Seriously? This really happens?

SECOND EMILY:
This is a copibomb. You only
have thirty seconds to pick the
right one.

The clock begins counting down from thirty. Stephen panics for a minute but is suddenly struck with an idea.

STEPHEN:
Can you conjure me some
chocolate?

SECOND EMILY:
You can have all the chocolate
you want as soon as you choose!
Hurry or we’ll all blow up!

STEPHEN:
No problem!

Stephen shoots the second Emily. The clock disappears, and the real Emily is able to move again. Stephen now has the time to comprehend the bizarreness of the situation, and it is slightly disturbing to him to see Emily with a bullet in her chest from his own gun. Emily understands what he’s thinking and gives him a moment before she speaks.

EMILY:
Copibombs can mimic bodies
but not knowledge, which I’m
so surprised that you figured
out on your own in that short
amount of time!

STEPHEN:
Sometimes you just have to
act on a whim. I guess it
would’ve been easier if it
had copied me, wouldn’t it?

EMILY:
Yeah, we would just do
a simple identification
spell, so this weapon is
mainly used against coses.
I suppose Xavier planted
that there specifically
for you, but he didn’t know
that you have one of the
most important powers that
anyone could have.

STEPHEN:
I have a power? What is it?

EMILY:
Your intuition.

STEPHEN:
(laughs)
Oh darn. I was hoping for
an actual power.

Emily laughs too. Stephen sees the body of the fake Emily on the ground and frowns.

STEPHEN:
Why couldn’t they make
that disappear too?

EMILY:
Well, that body didn’t
disappear, but we can.
Let’s go.

Emily starts to walk away, but Stephen stands still for a second.

EMILY:
And by disappear, I mean
leave this spot.

STEPHEN:
Oh.
(laughs)
Can you make us literally
disappear?

EMILY:
Not without my book.

STEPHEN:
I bet your book could tell us
what lays ahead.

EMILY:
Somehow I don’t think any book
could prepare us for what’s out
there!

They continue their journey with trepidation.
