INT. REBEL HIDEOUT. MORNING.
Curtis wakes up and sees Renee sitting against the wall. When Renee sees him, she gets up without looking at him.
RENEE:
I’m going out for a cigarette.
She grabs her cigarettes and lighter and storms outside. Curtis follows her.
EXT. CROSSGROVE HOLLOW. MORNING.
Renee is outside smoking, facing away from the hideout. Curtis comes out. He sees she is upset.
CURTIS:
The rain stopped. It should be a nice
day today.
RENEE:
Nice day? No! It starts off looking good,
but it’s only to lull you into a false sense
of hope. That’s how the universe gets you.
By midday, it starts to get bad, but there’s
still time for it to get better. By sunset, you
realize it’s not going to change! Reality always
intervenes.
CURTIS:
You’re not going to quit again, are you?
RENEE:
What?
CURTIS:
I haven’t seen you this bitter and
hopeless since the day we met. You’ve
gotta keep going til the end! If you leave,
I don’t know what I’d do.
RENEE:
You’d be fine. No one needs me.
CURTIS:
Renee, you can’t give up now!
Something good is about to happen,
I can feel it!
RENEE:
No offense, but your “feelings” wouldn’t
make me stay if I actually was going
to leave.
CURTIS:
So you’re staying? Oh, thank God! I
didn’t wanna have to leave!
RENEE:
Why would you have to leave?
CURTIS:
I’m not gonna let you go back out
there alone. I told you I’d always
be there for you.
RENEE:
Would you say that to any of the others?
CURTIS:
Like who? Miguel? William?
RENEE:
Tiffany?
CURTIS:
Tiffany? What about…?
A look of comprehension hits his face. Curtis steps towards her, but Renee steps away. A figure appears in the distance. Renee and Curtis draw their weapons. The figure turns out to be Daniel, who looks scared when he realizes they are there.
DANIEL:
What are you doing here? If you’re
hiding something, I’ll find it! This
is federally protected land!
RENEE:
Well, we’re here because…of you!
DANIEL:
Me?
RENEE:
We followed you here! We know what
you’re up to!
DANIEL:
Don’t you dare go there! Guards!
While Daniel turns his back to call for his guards, Curtis grabs Renee to hide. The guards come and search everywhere, but they do not find them.
DANIEL:
They were just here! They’re close-
I can smell their fear! Keep guard
everywhere in Crossgrove Hollow!
If you value your own life, do not let
them near Thornprick Path!
He leaves in a huff. The guards disperse. Renee and Curtis look down at it all from a tree branch. They look surprised but determined.
